So, yesterday Amos took G and me to the airport, so we could go see my mom and dad in AZ (more about our visit in a future post). Luckily I asked if amos could help us through security (they actually let you do that if you ask a check-in agent), because it took me forever to pull out the stuff they had to screen, get his sweatshirt of, take him out of the ergo carrier, etc. You could tell I was a newbie at the whole flying with a kid thing. Anyway, we flew southwest and lucked into boarding with another woman and her 3 week old, who asked us if we wanted to sit with her (if you've never flown southwest it's a free-for-all on southwest for seats). Her son's name was Ethan, and he was very cute with beautiful black hair. It was her first time flying, not just first time flying with a baby, but first time flying, period. The two of us snagged a row in the back. I took the window, and she took the aisle. No one attempted to sit with us, but perhaps the prospect of sitting on a 2.5 hour flight trapped between 2 babies did not thrill the other travelers. We used the seat in the middle for baby stuff. The boys did a great job--barely a fuss (until garrison got over-tired from the lack of nap). All in all it was a pleasant experience--the worst part was going through security (although that was SO much easier since amos came with us). At least when we fly home I have some ideas about how I can make the security thing a little less painful.

Yippee for G's first airplane ride! So fun! Totally agree...the worst part is getting all their gear(and your stuff and taking off your shoes and jacket and unpacking liquids and, oh yah, carrying the baby himself!) through security. So much easier with a helper - great idea to ask if Amos could help you through!
On our last trip, for Lulu's naptime, I snuggled her up in the ergo and she dozed for good portions of the flight. (Which left my hands free to watch Wall-E on my phone and eat peanuts!) Does G ever sleep in his?
Hope you have a great time in AZ!!!
I can't imagine flying for the first time with such a little fellow. You are brave women these days. All of the little ones will be experienced fliers by the time they start to school.
Have a good time in Arizona and say hello to your parents.
Security is ridiculous. Flying into Cincinnati from Paris, we had to go through security again. They made me and Lucy go through a special line by ourselves because she had a sippy cup with water! The agents were very kind and asked what they could do to help. But they even made me take off her soft-soled shoes!
Glad to hear it went so well. Sounds like he is a pro! I have flown solo many times with Carina and Dalton. It is an interesting experience each time. I have gotten my mom also to "assist" me through security. It helps a ton!!
Amy, did you take water in bottles for formula? G slept in the ergo when he was very young, but hasn't in a while. He was close to sleep in the ergo just as we boarded the plane (I even put the hood up), but all the commotion of getting seated woke him. So, I think he can do it, I just need to try it.
I was so surprised how calm she was, Katherine! I was very impressed. I hope G gets the chance to travel a lot. Amos and I have a long list of places we'd like to take him.
Jenn, did you have to go through the "family line?" I remember when amos and I were first dating he drove me to o'hare and came with me to the gate and waited with me. Those were the days!
Yvonne, I don't know how you wrangled two kiddos through security. It's tough.
Amos actually realized that he had gotten through security with a little credit card sized thing that has tiny scissors, a knife, etc. But, they had to test the sterile water in my bottles, and they probably touched them. (they may have worn gloves, but I don't know). Oh and one lady was a smart ass. I asked if I should carry him through the metal detector with me, and she said, "well, he can't walk himself"
OMG...what a bee-otch!!!
Yeah, we've been traveling with lots of baby liquids - either bm or formula - every time we've flown. In Cinci they took our bottles and said they were just going to swipe the outside of them to check for...whatever it is they check for (explosive something or other?). On the way back through Denver this last time, they didn't even bother.
E's still a little younger than G, maybe that's why she's still so used to sleeping in her carrier.
And we hope G gets to travel a lot too. It's our wish for Eloise as well. Hopefully starting them out early will help them be used to it!
I did have a lot of fun at the customs agent's expense. He asked me if I had any baby food or snacks. I said "no." Apparently he didn't believe that and asked again incredulously "no snacks?" I said "right here" and pointed to the milk bags. Ha ha. He didn't know quite what to say to that.
